This program includes intensive language instruction in Chinese (Mandarin) and Japanese. The introductory
courses meet, with a rotation of teachers, four hours a day, five days a week, for nine weeks. There are also
at least five hours daily of additional preparation time outside of class, including daily sessions
in the language lab. Section classes are kept small.
Chinese and Japanese 1160 are ideal courses for those planning to go to China or Japan in the fall as well
as for those who just want to get a good start on spoken and written Chinese or Japanese Because the
program extends through the entire day, those enrolled in it cannot take other courses or hold part-time
jobs, except possibly on weekends.
Students enrolling in the year long intensive Chinese and Japanese programs (FALCON) normally begin with
the summer session (courses numbered 1160) and continue intensively in the fall and spring (with courses
numbered 2260 [intermediate level] and 3360 [advanced level], respectively). Intermediate Chinese (2201-2202)
and Japanese (2201-2202) will be offered in the summer if there is sufficient demand. Students who have
not taken the prerequisites for these courses at Cornell are placed into intermediate courses by
examination only. The intermediate courses do not continue intensively in the fall.
Tuition and fees for each eight-credit course is $7,400. The first-round application deadline is March 1.
After March 1 acceptance into the program is on a rolling basis as long as there is room in the course.
Once accepted, a $500 nonrefundable deposit, which is applied toward tuition, is required within
two weeks of acceptance to ensure a place in the summer program. The remainder of the tuition is due
before or on the first day of the program.
